Squishing Toilet Paper

When my oldest was a toddler, I became quite adept at re-rolling a completely unrolled roll of toilet paper. I viewed it as a rite of passage and considered myself now fully entrenched in the mommy camp. After all, isn't that skill right at the top of every mom's "now I am officially a mother" list?

Well, that was then. Three kids later, I've learned that the ability to re-roll an unrolled roll of toilet paper in 30 seconds flat is one I could do without.

But the problem is, how do you keep kids from enjoying that swipe with wild abandon that sets a toilet paper roll spinning and unfurling ? Obviously you take away the joy of the act. When unrolling a roll of toilet paper takes 10 minutes instead of 10 seconds, it's lost its luster. Or at least it has for my kids.

And to do that, you just squish the roll of toilet paper before you hang it. (Place it on its side on a counter and press down firmly with your palm.) This flattens the cardboard roll just enough that unrolling it actually requires a little effort.

Maybe you're already doing this. I hope you are! But I'd like to think I'm not the only person out there who didn't know this little trick until I stumbled upon it quite by accident. So if it's new to you, give it a shot. I bet it will work for you too!

The Bible In 90 Days Challenge

Bible in 90 Days promo

I love the idea of setting a goal for reading through the bible. More than that, I love the idea of doing it in a group. There's nothing better than a whole bunch of people to discuss with and to help keep each other accountable.

When Amy first told me about this 90 -Day challenge, I was excited. I want to get on board and really do this! Unfortunately, I know myself. I know I have a major character flaw when it comes to this kind of stuff and my lack of follow-through always prevents me from seeing stuff through. So, I am looking forward to watching the discussions and participating when possible, but I'm just not comfortable with committing right now.

But please don't let my decision sway you. I definitely recommend doing this, and I don't think there could be a better leader for this than Amy!

Now, here's Amy in her own words...

Have you ever thought about reading the Bible... the whole thing, from start to finish?

I thought about it for years, and even attempted a few times on my own, before I discovered Bible in 90 Days, joined a group at my church and read the whole thing without stopping, cover to cover.

I was so blown away by the experience that I offered to facilitate it at my next church and have since facilitated several more times, trained facilitators and now plan to host an online community via my blog, MomsToolbox.

If you have ever considered reading the whole Bible, I cannot recommend strongly enough that you join me January 1- March 31, 2010, as I read and blog through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, bit by bit, in order, every day.

If you would like to join our online community, here’s what you’ll need to do:
  • Plan to set aside about an hour each day from January 1- March 31 for an incredibly enriching experience.
  • Get your hands on a Bible in 90 Days Bible from www.biblein90days.org, or your local Christian bookstore.
  • Consider also purchasing the Bible in 90 Days Participant’s Guide which offers weekly questions for you ponder to gain more insight from your reading. (I’ll be using these questions for our weekly Twitter meet-ups.)
  • Consider purchasing the Bible in 90 Days Essential Bible Companion, which offers a snapshot of information to help you make it through each week’s reading without getting distracted by researching on the internet.
  • Bookmark my site, www.MomsToolbox.com, and plan to visit January 1- March 31 after you have completed each day’s reading to see what I learned and report in that you have read for the day.
  • Follow me on Twitter (@MomsToolbox) and plan to be on Twitter every Monday night of the program from 9-10 CST (much like a study meeting—just online!) when we can ask and answer each other’s questions. Use and look for the #B90Days hashtag for our group discussion.

I would bet some of you are asking “Why this particular Bible?” Here’s why - The official Bible in 90 Days Bible is an NIV Bible, so it is an easy-to-read direct translation. This edition has large type, minimal footnotes and indicates where you should start and stop reading each day. Sure, you could accomplish this goal using your own Bible, but the statistics point to a huge success ratio for those using this official Bible... and not so much success for those who choose to use a different one. And don’t you want to succeed this time?

Although we won’t be meeting in person, my prayer is that via almost-daily online communication on my blog, as well as on Twitter we can still hold each other accountable, helping each other to accomplish our goal to read every word of the Bible attentively in 90 days.

I’d love to encourage you in this endeavor. It has been life-changing for me. I cannot express how much reading the bible in 90 days has helped me with every study I have participated in and every sermon I have heard since then. I now know the context of the stories. I know where to find them... and I can clearly see how they are related. And to read about Christ and the fulfillment of countless prophesies just after you’ve read about those prophesies is amazing!

If you’re up for the challenge, I’m up for encouraging you every step of the way. Pray about it. Think about it… And click on over to MomsToolbox.com to let me know if you’d like to join in the challenge and to learn more.

But do it soon so you’ll be ready to start 2010 in His Word… all of it! Hope to see you there!

** If you still have questions, plan to follow me on Twitter and join me for our first Twitter chat this Monday, December 21 from 9-10 CST. I’ll be there ready to chat about the program and would love to answer any questions you may have.

I have a feeling that this could definitely work for so many families! Stop by We Are THAT Family for more Works For Me Wednesday.

Gifts For Teachers

This is our first year having to buy Christmas gifts for teachers. Previously, the only teacher gifts we had to buy were also called mine. So, it's a bit more of a stretch this year. I can't just buy what I want for myself and I'm not too sure if the kids' teachers would be as crazy about a macro lens as I would be.

I've asked the kids for their input and they have a few suggestions. And Eric is a great big help. His suggestion is that we buy the teachers cars to guarantee our the academic success of our children. Tempting, but just slightly out of our budget.

So, I'm brainstorming and looking for tips. I'd love to hear them if you have some.

And if you're looking for ideas for the teachers in your life (or friends or family members), I've got a little tip of my own for you. How about a 3 month subscription to Stolen Moments Menu Planning?

Right now I'm offering a great Christmas Gift Subscription deal. A 3-month subscription to the basic plan is just $16.50 and a 3 month subscription to the complete plan is $36.00. I hope you'll check it out and cross some names off of your gift list.

And of course, I'd absolutely appreciate your tips on teacher gifts. (Eric has convinced that giving a gift to my own service to the kids' teachers is tacky.)

Don't forget to stop by We Are THAT Family for the themed "gift-giving-tips" edition of Works For Me Wednesay.

Pepsi Day

We are not a pop drinking family. However, my husband is a semi-occasional Pepsi drinker. About once a month, a 12 pack of Pepsi makes it into our house. And usually that means that each of the kids will have a cup or two of the bubbly stuff before it's gone. Pepsi definitely falls into the treat category for them, and against my better judgment, I'm okay with that.

So when we were in Disney World, pop was an option with every single meal. Of course the kids wanted some. We knew better than that. Not only is a daily pop habit something we don't want to encourage, but for Alex and Olivia, pop drinking equals potty trips every 10 minutes. That wouldn't have been fun for any of us.

Instead of giving in or listening to complaints, we promised the kids a Pepsi day when we got home. Any time they'd ask for some pop, we'd just remind them of our Pepsi day plans. They were so excited about that idea that they didn't care they were drinking the usual water or milk.

This past weekend, we celebrated Pepsi day. So what exactly is Pepsi day? A day when the kids get their fill of Pepsi, of course. Each kid had two Pepsi's throughout the day. They had one can each and as an extra special treat, one glass bottle each. The day turned out great and it definitely worked for us!

Capturing The Moment

I'll admit it - I am a picture junkie. I love taking pictures and I love looking at them. I love the memories they evoke.
I also admit that I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to photography. Everything I've learned has been through trial and error. That is why I love my digital camera. I can take over 800 shots (as I did last week in Disney World) and know that at least a few of them are bound to turn out great.

When it comes to pictures, I do enjoy the posed pictures where everyone looks at the camera. But more than those, I love random pictures. You know, the kind taken when no one knows you are taking their picture? I just think those pictures really capture the moment.

During our trip, I realized some of the best times to snap those random, capturing-the-moment pictures were when we were standing in line waiting to get on rides or when we were just walking to the next ride.

Here are two of my favorite random shots from the week.

Someone drew a hopscotch grid in the middle of the road at Epcot. As soon as Olivia saw it, she broke into some spontaneous hopscotching. I'll never forget her delight as she jumped to the end, nor will I ever forget the man who stopped to watch her just because seeing the simple enjoyment was such a treat. This picture captures those things perfectly.

Look closely in the photo above. See that arm and fist on the right-hand side? That's Alex. He was running so fast in his excitement to check out something with his cousins that I completely missed the shot of him. Except I didn't, not really. Because this shot is even better. It sums up the joy of Disney World for a 5 year old boy. I'll treasure it always.

Capturing the moment with random pictures? It definitely works for me!

Packing Snacks

As I'm slowly crossing off things on our countdown to Disney to-do list (5 days and counting...), I'm beginning to pack our suitcases. I like to spread out the packing over a few days whenever possible. I find that it really helps to remember all those little things that usually get forgotten. Also, it's much easier to toss a newly-cleaned article of clothing right into the suitcase than to put it away just to pull it out again in a few days.

While writing my packing list today, I was reminded of a favorite tip my whole family uses whenever we go to Disney World. We pack our own snacks and a few other food items. This is a great way to have a quick breakfast before leaving the room or energy food while at the parks without the extra expense.

The added bonus is that this leaves extra space in our suitcases for souvenirs on the return trip home. Even if I cram something into every possible space in the suitcases, I know we'll have extra room for any goodies that we buy.

This tip definitely applies for any traveling too - not just Disney World. But obviously, I have Disney on the brain right now!

Keeping My Budding Chefs Busy

My girls love to be in the kitchen with me. Well, all of the kids do actually, but with Isabelle and Alex now in school, it's just me and the little girls.

I have always done my best to include our kids in the kitchen and let them help out in any way possible. I think I've had at least one child sitting on the kitchen counter every single day for at least 4 years now. Honestly, it's the best way for them to get right in on the action. We have kitchen stools that get brought in sometimes too.

When I know I will be working on a really involved project that isn't very child friendly, I still let them join me and occupy themselves. I use a simple trick of just some flour and a little bit of water, just enough to form a basic dough.
I let the kids have at it once I get the beginning mixing out of the way. I leave some extra flour out so that they can roll it out and imitate me. It's easier than mixing up a homemade playdough and it's also better than giving them raw dough that I've made, although I've been known to do that on occasion too.
Just because they can't help with what I'm working on at that moment doesn't mean I can't find something for them to do.

Yes, they get messy.

Yes, my floors get messy.

But the smiles on their faces while they create and the fun we have working alongside each other more than makes up for it.

Making Time To Read

Reading is definitely my second favorite hobby, right after writing, cooking, photography and all those other things that go into blogging.

I tend to read about two books a week. I could probably read more if I just skimmed through and didn't really get into the story. But then, that wouldn't feel like reading at all to me.

I used to believe having kids meant that I didn't have time to read. I'd occasionally grab a few books from the library and feel good if I made it through two of them before they were due back. My reading time was limited to those 15 or 20 minutes before I fell asleep at night.

I'm not sure what changed for me, but one day I realized if I made reading a priority in my day, I could fit it in seamlessly. Plus, it is a great example for the kids. Why would I expect them to love reading and find enjoyment in curling up with a good book if they never actually saw me doing that?

So now, on any given day, I read for myself from half an hour to an hour during the day, plus that standard before bed reading. Sometimes there are long chunks of time when there are no pressing chores and the kids are occupied with something else and sometimes I sneak in 5 minutes here and there on really busy days.

I'll admit there are days when it feels indulgent, but when I see the kids grab their own books to "read" and curl up next to me, I am smart enough to acknowledge the greater good of this selfish habit. Taking time for myself while setting a good example for my children definitely works for me.

Cinnamon-Sugar Tortilla Chips

We tend to have a lot of homemade sweets and desserts on hand. I suppose that's just a side effect of writing a food blog. And I assure you that is the only reason we ever have such forbidden food in our house. I blame it all on the blog.

But every so often, the supply of sweets runs dry. This usually happens on nights when Eric and I really want something desserty before bed. I have a few quick-to-fix, minimal ingredient recipes that I rely on during those times. One of our favorite is cinnamon-sugar tortilla chips.

These are so easy and they are so good. Every time we have them, either Eric or I ask how something so simple can taste so good. They're especially great for snacking on while watching a movie.
Making them is really simple. Just take as many tortillas as you want and cut them into chip-sized triangles. (For the two of us, I usually use 4 tortillas and get 8 "chips" per tortilla.) Melt some butter in a skillet, add some chips and cook until brown and crispy on each side, about 2-3 minutes per side. Immediately sprinkle with a cinnamon-sugar combination. Add a bit more butter to the skillet for each batch and lower the heat if the butter starts to brown too much.

That's it. So easy and so surprisingly satisfying as a sweet snack or dessert.

Giving Up A Losing Battle

When it comes to laundry, nothing is more annoying than the lone sock (or two or three) at the end of the pile of clean clothes.

I used to fear those lone socks. I used to not know what to do with them and let myself get consumed with finding their missing partners.

Then one day I snapped. I gave up the battle. I tossed all those miscreant socks into bag and tucked it into a corner of my bedroom.

Now when I come across a few loners in my laundry basket, I figure it's just more to add to the bag. Nothing to stress over!

Every so often, I'll feel overly ambitious and dump the bag to see if I can put any new socks together. And wouldn't you know, I usually get at least a half dozen or so matches. Then I just toss the remaining offenders back into the bag and forget about them until the next time I'm bit by the bug of over-ambition.

Letting those loner socks stew in their own misfortune really works for me!

A Simple Quesadilla Trick

We eat quesadillas for lunch at least once a week. I used to be intimidated by the process, but now it's just as easy as making grilled cheese. I don't know what I was so scared of before.

When I make quesadillas, I like to fry them in a little bit of butter so that they get crispy and golden brown without being overly greasy. I used to add a tablespoon of butter to my skillet for each batch I'd make. That meant the first side ended up exactly how I wanted it but the second side wouldn't get as buttery or as crisp and golden.

So what I do now is add 1/2 a tablespoon of butter to the skillet and then cut the remaining the 1/2 into pieces which I place on top of the quesadillas. That way, when I flip them, the second side still gets to cook in fresh butter and comes out just as good as the first side.

Like I said, it's just a simple little trick, but it really works for me!

Do you use a different method for making quesadillas? What works best for you?

Easiest Gum In Hair Solution Ever

Every Sunday as we leave church, Isabelle's Sunday school teacher hands her a pack of Trident gum. And since Isabelle loves to share with her brother and sisters, we've been letting Alex and Olivia have a half piece each. They are new to the whole gum experience, so it has been a great novelty for them.

So I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised when Alex walked up to me the other day and told me that he had gum stuck in his hair. Sure enough, there was a good-sized chunk of gum stuck on the top of his head.

My mind immediately started swirling with all the gum-in-hair antidotes I've read about. I was ready to reach for the peanut butter when I had a better idea. I grabbed the scissors, cut off the whole section of hair and sent him on his way.

Usually this time of year we start letting Alex's summer buzz cut grow back in. (Gotta keep that head warm in the winter after all.) But, I figured he could do with one more cut for the year. So I let Eric know that he'd have to buzz him again and that was that.

Getting gum out of hair is pretty painless in my opinion. (And the girls have been threatened that they'll get the exact same treatment if they ever do that.) I might not win mother of the year for this solution, but it definitely worked for me!

Easy Bacon De-Greasing

I rely on diced bacon a lot around our house. It is an easy way to really up the flavor of any dish, even with just a slice or two. I use scissors to make the dicing of the bacon easy. Then I add those pieces to a skillet. Easy enough...but I always had a tough time getting all the grease off those little pieces.

Then I discovered this little trick that really works for me. I remove the bacon from the skillet with a slotted spoon and place it in a bowl that is lined with a double layer coffee filter. The coffee filters are very absorbent and it is easy to stir the bacon pieces around so that all the grease is absorbed.

If I'm dealing with a large amount of bacon pieces, I'll add an extra layer or two of coffee filters on top of each other. So, I'll add a third of the bacon to the bowl, then I'll top that with another double layer of coffee filters and add more bacon. It's so easy and really works great.

Plus, clean up is a breeze. I just throw the coffee filters away when I'm done and clean out the bowl. I never have to deal with those grease drips on the counter that can happen when you drain bacon on a paper towel on a plate.

The Only Organization Tool That I Can Count On

Organization and I don't go hand-in-hand. We butt heads on a daily basis.

Sure, I have great aspirations of one day being an organizing queen, but I use to have aspirations of living under water someday too. Honestly, one is about as likely to happen as the other.

Every so often, I'll get on a big organization kick and re-organize everything in our lives - from the pantry to the kids toys to our daily routine. I'll do great for a few days. If you want advice on how to start getting organized, I could probably give you that. But if you want advice on how to stay organized, you should probably look somewhere else.

All that aside, I do have one little trick I use for organizing my time that has worked without fail since I was a little girl. I write myself a mini to-do list. And most of the time, I stick to it and feel productive by the end of the day. It's a great thing!

Most mornings, I jot down a quick list of all the things I have to accomplish that day. I usually list the easy, no-option stuff too, like making breakfast, lunch and dinner. That way I know I'll be able to cross some things of my list no matter what.

That morning list is for all my household and mom duties. Then, each night after the kids are in bed, I sit down at my computer and write a quick list of all the things I need to get done work-wise. I cross off as I go and it usually keeps me on track.

I have tried expensive scheduling systems and elaborate plans in the past. I love them all, I really do. But I've kind of learned to just be honest with myself and stick with the pen and paper list. It works for me!

Stop by We Are THAT Family for lots of real organizing tips. And stop by Hooked On Houses for more Hooked On... since I am definitely hooked on lists!

Building A Bunk Bed - A Must See

Today was a big day. It was a day of transitions. Olivia officially said good bye to her toddler bed. Gracie officially said good bye to her crib. And I cried a little as I realized I may never lay one of my babies to sleep in a crib again.

But the tears couldn't last long because there was work to be done!

While Eric ran out to IKEA to pick up the bunk bed we chose over the weekend, the kids and I got to work on getting the girls old beds pulled out of the room.

Once Eric was home, the fun really started. He can not do anything in our house without a little team of helpers tagging along. But this project required lots of work. (It is from IKEA after all.) Eric knew that the kids would just get in the way, which would slow down his process and which could be dangerous for them.

So...what to do?

Watching dad work is entertaining. In case we ever doubted it, the way they stuck to their front-row seats proved it.

A few hours later, the new bunk beds were in place and everyone took a turn trying them out. I made sure to keep my emotions in check. I got in on the excited action with them.

So many things worked for us today - IKEA, working together, transitioning from baby to big girl, enjoying a dad matinee. Fun stuff!

Crazy Pajama Night

Over the years, we have been blessed with tons of hand-me-downs for the kids and our wonderful families have gifted them with lots of clothes. So they all have a plethora of pajamas. Sometimes, as often happens with kids, we lose a pajama top or bottom due to staining or the deep, dark pits under their beds. So we have a collection of mismatched pajama pieces that is second only to our mismatched sock pile.

And every so often, we have to dig into that mismatched pile if I get behind on laundry or if I just want to mix things up for fun. I pick out a bunch of pieces, dump them on the floor, declare it crazy pajama night and let the kids have at it. They love to pick out the craziest bedtime outfit they can put together.
(Sorry for the poor quality of the picture!)

It's such a simple little thing, but to the kids it's a riot. It makes me a fun mom in their eyes. And that definitely works for me!

Summer Is The Time For Rule Breaking

I tend to be a bit of a stickler when it comes to certain rules in our house. And I find myself getting more in a rut of being a not-so-fun mom as I get older. You'd think I'd start loosening up a bit as the kids get older, but that hasn't proven to be the case so far.

Like germs. Germs have become my new obsession. To my dismay, I have become one of those moms who will not put my kids in a grocery cart without wiping it down first. And I carry bottles of anti-bacterial hand sanitizer in my purse. There is a rational part of my brain that knows overuse of those things defeat their desired purpose, but all rationalization flies out the window when I see my kids grabby hands touching everything they can. (Or in Alex's case...licking...including the hand rails in the monkey house at the zoo.)

Anyhow, I've gotten way off topic here. I'm supposed to be talking about breaking the rules. Because that is what we have been doing this summer. It's what I've been working on. You might call it my attempt to loosen up a bit.

So, in an effort to break some of my own rules, the kids have been eating popsicles often this summer. And not the healthy, fruit-filled kind either. No, they've been delightedly indulging in the boxed, freeze-at-home, stickless popsicles that are full of artificial flavors and coloring.

I keep telling myself it's summer time. I loved those things when I was a kid in summer. These popsicle treats are not about breaking good health habits, but about sharing and creating memories with my kids. They deserve that. Just as much as they deserve a mom who's sometimes willing to break her own rules for the sake of a good time.

Yes, we've been enjoying popsicles. And the kids have had a blast running around barefoot all summer. And they've stayed up late. And they've played in the rain. And they've gotten muddy, sandy and grass-stained all in one day. And they've drank pop. And they've practiced somersaults off the couch.

You know what? They've had the best summer of their lives. And it hasn't been so bad for me either. I think this breaking the rules thing might just need to work for me a little more often.

Working With Dad

Eric and I have always made an effort to include the kids in all of our day to day tasks. We've also made an effort to teach them the value of hard work and a job well-done. It is amazing the self-confidence that is so easily built in the kids when we do this.

Most of the things I have the kids help me with are daily chores that are just part of our life. They still take a great deal of pride in being my helpers, but that just pales in comparison to those times that they help Eric with some job.

This habit was really cemented for Eric a few years ago when he began taking Isabelle with him to work occasionally. What began as a way for the two of them to spend a little one-on-one time quickly turned into a wonderful partnership. Isabelle wasn't happy to just sit and chat while Eric worked. She wanted in on the action too. So Eric gave her a few small responsibilities which she happily tackled, and then begged for more. This little joint venture between the two turned into a wonderful boost for Isabelle's self-esteem. It was a tremendous bonding opportunity for the two of them. And it was a true help for Eric. A few months later, he rewarded her with an Employee of the Month framed certificate and a McDonald's gift card.
As the other kids have gotten older, he's made sure to include them in lots of things as well. Alex loves to go to work with him and he'll even pretend to go to "his job" and get working when Eric leaves for work. Olivia loves going with him, although she's more prone to imitate me by pretending to go Krogering while Alex works.

This week Eric had to change the brakes on our minivan. So he worked out a plan with Alex and Olivia so that they'd each get a turn to help him. And even Gracie wanted in on the action.

The kids were a great help for Eric and their faces beamed with their accomplishments.

Alex and Olivia each worked with Eric on one side of the van and Gracie helped him drive around the sub to test out the new brakes.

Having a houseful of proud and happy little helpers definitely works for us!

Computer Time Sibling Bonding

I am happy to see that our 4 kids have a fantastic relationship with each other. They are one anothers biggest fans and best friends. I love that!

One of the things that we implemented a while back to help increase those bonds is a one-on-one computer time. The three younger children each have a day of the week when they spend 30 minutes on the computer with Isabelle. They play games, they "write" together on her blog, and they basically just have a great time.
It's a simple thing, but it really has cemented the relationships between them.

Isabelle takes pride in being their helper and Alex, Olivia and Gracie relish having their big sister's undivided attention. This one-on-one computer time definitely works for us!

Corn Shuckers

Corn on the cob is a huge summer time favorite around our house. We all love it! That means we typically have it at least once or twice a week.

That itself is wonderful. But what's not wonderful is all the corn shucking that has to be done.

Fortunately, I have a very willing team of helpers. They all get in on the act and that corn gets shucked in no time.

On nice days, they shuck on the patio. But on rainy days they shuck in the kitchen. I let them have fun with it, even though I know that means I'll probably end up sweeping and washing the floor.

I'd rather they have fun and enjoy helping then be worried about rules and start viewing this job as a chore.

Letting my kids shuck the corn, messes and all, definitely works for me! (Apparently using the word "shuck" a lot works for me too.)

A Grammatical Disclaimer

I freely admit to consistently using improper grammar in the following areas:
1. I like run-on sentences.
2. I have a tendency to end sentences with a pronoun. (I really do. I can't help it.)
3. I always seem to use passive voice in my sentences. (See?)

I've been trying to break this habit, unsuccessfully, for years, so now I just accept that as my writing style, and since I'm not writing for grades anymore, I embrace it. (Again, see?)
