On Writing A Book

Two years ago, during our internet-free days, I began outlining and writing a book. It was called "Cooking During Stolen Moments - An Affair With My Kitchen." Sound familiar?

The book writing got pushed aside in favor of blogging and I don't regret that for one second. But when I attended the Book Deals session at Blissdom, my interest in was piqued again.

I've actually dreamt of writing since I was a little girl. I started my first fiction book in 4th grade. I still have the notebooks somewhere I'm sure. My interest has shifted from writing fiction to non-fiction, but it's still there nonetheless.

Have you ever thought about writing? Maybe you've considered turning your blogging into a book deal. Well, over at Happy To Be At Home, I'm sharing everything I learned during the book deal session at Blissdom. Here is Part 1 and Part 2.

Spreading The Bloggy Love

Photobucket

Over at Happy To Be At Home, we are challenging everyone to spread the first two weeks of February, leading up to Valentine's Day, spreading the love to our favorite bloggers.

I know I have been seriously lacking in this lately. That's just not right, because there are so many blogs I read on a daily basis, and so many fellow bloggers that encourage me, make me laugh, or inspire me. I am going to jump into this challenge whole-heartedly and spread as much Bloggy Love as I can!
  1. Comment, comment, comment! Stop by your favorite blogs and leave a comment on one or two posts. (I started doing some of this last night, and plan to do more tonight!)
  2. Subscribe. If you don’t already, subscribe via RSS, e-mail, or follow the blog on blogger.
  3. Social bookmarking. Choose a great post or two on your favorite blogs and bookmark them using StumbleUpon, Kirtsy, Digg, Del.icio.us, or any of the other social bookmarking sites out there.
  4. Tweet. If you have a Twitter account, send out a few tweets with links to your favorite bloggers.
  5. Click through an ad or visit a site sponsor.
  6. Send a thank you email. Let your favorite bloggers know just how much you appreciate the dedication and hard work they put into their blogs.
  7. Mark your favorite blogs as a favorite in Technorati.
  8. Read through the archives. Then comment on a post or two that’s new to you.
  9. Write a post on your blog and share links to some of your favorite bloggers.
  10. Visit some of the blogs in your favorite blogger’s blogroll and let them know how you found their link.
  11. Nominate your favorites for blog awards or a BlogHer of the Week post.
  12. Find some new favorites. Spend some time exploring new blogs found through memes or carnivals.
  13. Grab a button. If your favorite bloggers have a button for their site, grab it and put it in your sidebar.
  14. When or if your favorite blogger hosts a Mr. Linky, do your best to participate.
Also at Happy To Be At Home, we've compiled a list of memes to keep you blogging and linked up throughout the week. There are lots of new-to-me memes on the list. I'm looking forward to participating in as many of them as possible during the next few weeks. (By the way, if you host a meme and it's not listed, just leave a comment there and we'll update the list.)

13 Little Reminders To Myself

  1. There is no work more important than stopping to give one of my children a hug when they ask for one.
  2. When my neighbor brings over a freshly made loaf of bread, it is a good idea to remember that I'm trying to lose 20 pounds. Slowly savoring one thin slice is much more rewarding treat than eating half the loaf, by myself, in 5 minutes.
  3. Christmas was 3 weeks ago. There are thank you cards that must, without excuse, be written and mailed out immediately!
  4. Putting 8 meals in the freezer is a legitimate excuse for falling behind in the laundry.
  5. The bathroom floor does not clean itself - ever!
  6. My children will remember my example far longer then they will remember the words I speak.
  7. The best way to keep all of the wonderful relationships I've built in the blogging community is to actually comment on blogs, at least once in a while. (Sorry!)
  8. Playing with balloons is a fun part of childhood. I need to let my kids be kids when they are given balloons by the nice lady at the grocery store instead of letting my over-the-top fear of popping balloons get in the way.
  9. Coffee is good, but water is better!
  10. It doesn't hurt to say yes once in a while.
  11. I bought 2 calendars just after Christmas to organize my blogging time. They are still blank, and blank pages really don't help organize anything.
  12. Blogging is good, but sleep is better! (That's almost as hard as, if not harder then, remembering #9.)
  13. Eric does not know what I am thinking unless I tell him. Just because he is my husband doesn't mean he can read my mind.
In case you haven't heard, the old Thursday Thirteen hub is no longer up and running. So, Joy, Toni and I decided to start a new version over at Happy To Be At Home. We are calling it "3 Moms Thursday {Thirteen}." I always enjoyed participating in Thursday 13, so I'm really excited about this. I hope you'll come join us each week.

Weigh-In Wednesday at Happy To Be At Home

2moms20pounds

Did you make a goal to lose weight in 2009? If you’re like many, you probably did. But losing weight is hard when you don’t have a support group.

So Joy and I over at Happy to be at Home have teamed up not only to support each other in our effort to lose 20 pounds, but to help support and encourage others in their weight-loss efforts.

Each Wednesday Joy and I will be posting our progress in our 2 Moms, 20 Pounds challenge, and we’ll be including a Mr. Linky at the bottom of each post.

If you’re trying to lose weight, or even just trying to eat healthier, we encourage you to link up so you can share details about your progress — your challenges, your successes, your plans for the next week, etc. Then others can visit you at your blog to give you encouragement. If you don’t have a blog, you can “weigh-in” in the comments section.

Make sure you stop by our 2 Moms, 20 Pounds: Weigh-In Wednesday #1 to see how my first week went. And link up so I can see how yours went as well!

National Bankruptcy Day

Lisa has written an excellent piece on my other blog Happy to be at Home. If you haven’t heard about a new law that has been passed that will affect everyone who sells children’s toys you must read this post.

As if the horrible economy wasn’t enough, if you sell products targeted for children ages 12 and under, be prepared to THROW AWAY these items, as you will no longer be able to sell them unless you comply to this law.

You read that correctly. Thrown. Away.

I don’t know about you, but I feel ill just typing it, let alone imagining it.

Oh, and if you plan to sell and make a little money from your children’s old items, be forewarned, local yard sale groups and places like Ebay and Craigslist will no longer allow sale of those items, either.

No joke.

Let me back up a bit, as I’m pretty sure this might be the first time you are hearing this.

You can read the rest of the post here.

At H2b@H - Those Troublesome Turkeys

For anyone who hasn't heard, we are hosting a Thanksgiving contest over at Happy To Be At Home. Here are the details:

Troublesome Turkey Tale CONTEST!

Do you have a Troublesome Turkey Tale you would like to share? I know during this time of year many magazines and websites are filled with wonderful tips on how to make your Thanksgiving perfect. The 3 Moms thought it might be fun if we shared our not-so-successful stories.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Post your Troublesome Turkey story on your blog. Your story does not have to be specifically about turkeys, it can be about any aspect of the big day. Then come back here and link your story post to Mr. Linky. You can link your stories from November 6th to November 15th. If you don’t have a blog you can email us your story at 3moms@happytobeathome.net and we will publish it on our site. Starting November 16th, Happy to be at Home will list all the posts and readers can vote on the best Turkey Tale. Don’t forget to link back to Happy to be at Home on your story post so others can join in the fun.

THE PRIZE: The three highest vote-getters will receive a 3 Moms Recipe’s cookbook as well as a $5 coupon off of a Cook’s Ham. The person who gets the most votes will also receive a set of measuring prep bowls from Taste of Home Entertaining.

Photobucket

Please head over here and share your tale with us! And we'd also love it if you'd help spread the word about this fun contest.

Kid Blogger Konnection at H2b@H

Kid bloggers are just like us mom bloggers. They want people (preferably their own age) to read what they have to say. They want comments and feedback on what they write. They also want to read what other kids are doing and have to say. And most importantly, they want to forge the same kinds of friendships and community we all enjoy in the blogosphere. But this is hard to achieve when you don’t know how to find any other kid blogs.

I know this, and I hear it every day from Isabelle. She loves her blog but she wishes more people read it, especially other kids. Until now, the only way we've found other kid bloggers for her was if I stumbled across a mom's blog that had a link to their child's blog.

That is why I am so excited about this blogring that we are starting at Happy To Be At Home! You can go here to read more details about it or go here to add your child's blog to the list.

Happy To Be At Home Will Return ASAP

Just a quick note to let you all know that we are having some hosting issues with Happy To Be At Home...again. We are in the process of getting the site transferred over to a new host. It should be back up in a few days with a new and improved hosting company. Hopefully, this will resolve all of our issues.

Also, Toni's personal blog, The Happy Housewife, is down. Both sites are hosted by the same company. Hopefully her site will be back up in a few days as well.

On a side note, once The Happy Housewife is back up and running, make sure you stop in to congratulate Toni. Her blog was written about in two newspapers this week! We've always known Toni provided a terrific resource on her blog and it is wonderful to see her getting the recognition. You can read the articles here and here.

Searching for My Ambition

I seem to have misplaced my ambition for conquering my clutter. It seems to have gotten lost somewhere in the middle of warm, sunny days and trying out some new recipes in my kitchen. So, if anyone happens to stumble across it, could you please be so kind as to send it back my way? Thanks!

In the meantime, I will rely on the accountability and encouragement of the Conquer the Clutter challenge over at Happy To Be At Home. And seeing as how I'm supposed to be helping provide that encouragement, I'll begin by encouraging myself the best way I know how - baby steps! For me, the best way to always get back on track is to take baby steps back toward where I want to be. Hence this post.

One of the largest areas of clutter that I constantly ignore is my closet and dresser drawers. I have clothes in there that I do not wear anymore and will never wear again. Some are from high school, some are just not me anymore, and a lot of them are size 4 that I just haven't been able to let go. I can tell myself over and over again that having 3 children in 3 1/2 years hasn't permanently altered my body, and that someday I WILL fit in those clothes again, but I know that's just not the truth.

So that is my next clutter-conquering goal. I will donate whatever I can that has not been worn in the past year. I will throw away whatever is not good enough to donate. I will not try to convince myself that I could fit into something again someday in the future. I will not cry when I pack up that cute little black and gray suit I got when I was 21. I will not try to talk Isabelle into wanting my Girbaud or Z. Cavaricci jeans from high school. I also will not cry when I realize how empty my closet and drawers are now, or when I realize that the clothes I do have left loudly proclaim: "I am 31 and the mother of 4 children!"

There are big days ahead for me here - conquering the physical clutter as well as the emotional clutter.

And don't forget, if you'd like to join us in our mission to End 08 Great with 6 months of challenges, head on over to Happy To Be At Home and join in the fun!

Conquer The Clutter Challenge - Slow Progress

So far this week I have not managed to finish everything on my list for the first week of the Conquer the Clutter challenge. However, I have made a very good dent in it. Overall, I'm pretty pleased.

Fortunately, it won't be too hard to have to move my last item to finish to next week's list. Our clutter-level is pretty minimal at the moment because we've moved a lot of our stuff to storage until we move. There isn't as much stuff to add to the clutter as there normally is, although I am surprised that we still have so much here.

The first item on my To-Do list was to go through our homeschooling books for the past year and get stuff packed up for storage. Here is our schooling cabinet.
The middle shelf holds all of Isabelle's text books and school papers. All of her other books are kept in her personal cabinet since they aren't specifically "school-only" books. The shelf below that is where I keep papers, coloring books, etc. for Alex and Olivia.

Here is all of Isabelle's school materials spread out on the counter. I will continue using many of the same things in Alex and Olivia's box so I didn't have to "de-clutter" that box.
Inside Isabelle's box is many of the papers and projects that she did during the first half of the school year, as well as some of the workbooks that were completed during that time.
Isabelle uses one binder, divided into sections, where she keeps all of her daily assignments that aren't completed in a workbook. The first section is where I write down her daily assignments for her to check off as she goes.
This is the stack of all of her assignment sheets throughout the year.
Here are all of the textbooks and workbooks that will probably be reused someday for Alex, Olivia, and Gracie.
This is the pile of all the papers and projects that I decided to keep. I put them in a legal-sized brown envelope and put it in the same box as all of the books. It will be fun to look through when we need to pull out the third grade box in the future. Then I'll let Isabelle decide what, if anything, she'd like to keep for her own memory box.
I also kept all of her assignment sheets so that we have a record of everything she did for the year. Someday I'd like to scan all of the papers so that I can throw them away, yet still have a record of all her work. But that's going to have to wait for awhile. Here is the finished product. The packing box will go in storage for now. The magazine holders and empty red box will go back in her cabinet to be filled with all the new, fourth grade books. The few books left are some that we need to finish up over the summer.
I also went through all of Isabelle's clothes. I was able to pack away 1 garbage bag worth of clothes that are too small. That bag will go in storage also. After that, I reorganized the shelves so that everything was easy to find, and divided into types.
The one thing left on my list is this catch-all cabinet. Isn't it a mess?
After I took this picture I spent 15 minutes pulling out things that could be thrown away. That was the easy part. Now I have to reorganize the shelves and try to find a permanent home for some other things.
Are you ready to join the Happy To Be At Home End 08 Great challenge? Each month for the rest of the year will focus around a different challenge to help us all get everything into order so that we can end the year right. For July, we are Conquering the Clutter. We will be posting a carnival style post every Monday with links to all the participants progress.

A Tale of 3 Moms

Once upon a time there were 3 Moms. They loved to write about cooking, homemaking, homeschooling, saving money, and other things related to being at home. Then one day, one of the moms had an idea. She decided to record her shopping, meals, and recipes for an entire month! When another mom read about her plan and asked if she could join in, the first mom was happy to have a partner in her endeavor. Mom number three, not wanting to be left out, decided to join the fun too. For 31 days these 3 Moms planned, shopped, baked, took pictures and wrote everything down. As the 31 days were coming to an end, our 3 Moms were sad, and their readers were sad. Their journey together had been fun, challenging, and inspiring. Did it have to end?

The 3 Moms knew they couldn’t keep writing and photographing each and every morsel of food that went into their mouths. But they also felt like they had more to say about other things, like homeschooling, frugal living, simplifying, and motherhood. It wasn’t long before an idea was born. A new home, a place where moms could go to be encouraged by “real moms.” Moms who feed their kids cake for dinner, who can’t always get breakfast on the table, and moms who burn things, including themselves.

These 3 Moms want you to know that you are not alone in your journey through motherhood. Please join them as they chronicle their homemaking successes, failures, tips, and tricks. Each day you will find something to inspire you, to make you laugh, to make you think, or to assist you in your home. The 3 Moms believe all women—including housewives, stay-at-home and work-at-home moms, homeschooling moms, and even women who work outside of the home—can discover the joy in being Happy to be at Home.

We invite you to visit our new website - Happy to be at Home - Real Women offering Real Encouragement.

A Grammatical Disclaimer

I freely admit to consistently using improper grammar in the following areas:
1. I like run-on sentences.
2. I have a tendency to end sentences with a pronoun. (I really do. I can't help it.)
3. I always seem to use passive voice in my sentences. (See?)

I've been trying to break this habit, unsuccessfully, for years, so now I just accept that as my writing style, and since I'm not writing for grades anymore, I embrace it. (Again, see?)

Hence, I invoke Blogger Artistic License for this blog!
