Wild Children Bring Me Wild Daisies

I never knew that daisies grew wild. I'm still not sure that they do, but in our backyard today, the kids found a batch of daisies growing in the middle of some weeds and rocks. They were so excited with this discovery.

Isabelle was the first child who ran over to me with the others on her heels. They asked if they could pick the flowers for me. How could I say no to that?So away they ran back down the hill. I watched them take turns choosing and picking the flowers. Within a few minutes, they all came running back up that hill. The smiles on their faces were evident before they were within earshot.

One by one, they presented me with their fistful bundles of flowers. Olivia went all out and actually pulled her daisies out of the ground, roots and all. If I had had more forethought, we would have planted those daisies right by our backdoor. Instead, I trimmed the roots and added them to my "vase" (an empty glass) with all the others.

These flowers are beautiful. I smile every time I look at them. Their simplicity, their meaning, the fact that they were given easily yet lovingly from my children...all those things I see when I glimpse at those flowers.
Is there any better way to add peace to a busy kitchen than to have a bouquet of fresh, hand-picked wild daisies as a backdrop to dirty dishes?

A Little Cliche of Wisdom

We've heard it many times throughout our lives, and if you're anything like me, it's something that you try to teach your children - you should never judge a book by its cover.

Personally, I know it's not always easy. After all, we are only human and are initial tendencies aren't always the best. We tend to be quick to judge and quick to dismiss. It really is a shame, isn't it?

If a picture is worth a thousand words, than a video, especially this one, must be worth at least 10,000. Please watch this, turn your volume, call your loved ones over, and prepare to learn an incredible lesson.

Sorry I can't embed it so you'll have to click over, but trust me, it is more than worthwhile. So click here, and then come back and share your thoughts with me.

Eric and I have watched this at least a dozen times since we first found it last night - definitely a thing I love this Thursday!

Kitchen Counter Clutter

Even though we tend to collect a lot of clutter in our house, I've always tried to stay on top of it so that it doesn't overtake us. This has always been especially true in the kitchen. I tend to be a little anal-retentive about cleaning off the kitchen counters.

That typically means that I put the toys, papers and books that somehow seem to accumulate there away and wipe down the counters with a wet rag. Our breakfast bar, in particular, is a huge collector of clutter. Recently I've noticed that my anal-retentiveness has been lagging a bit with keeping that cleaned off.

I'm not sure what happened, but I just seem blind to that mess lately. I've taken to straightening the clutter instead of getting rid of it. It really started to bother me today. I'm determined to get back into the habit of keeping it cleaned off, although hopefully I'll be a little more relaxed with it.

However, a few weeks ago Eric brought me home a great kitchen counter clutter helper. I've always had a section of counter space where I keep some of my favorite cookbooks. These books kind of fill up some dead space that isn't very usable. But know that dead space is made a bit more usable with my newest toy. This cookbook stand is the perfect size for my little selection of favorites. I love the way it looks and how it adds a little splash of style to this otherwise barren corner.I think the best part of it is that it holds the cookbooks up and keeps them off the counter. That means they won't get wet or dirty from spills while I cook. It also means I now have a little extra space to store some magazines or my calendars or other things underneath the stand.

I'm realizing that this post seems a little double-minded. But it somehow all combines together in my little world. A newly cluttered space meets a newly uncluttered space. Actually, that phrase could apply to so many aspects of my life right now! I'm sure a lot you understand how this happens, at least I hope you do.

Anyhow...I'm linking this post to Things I Love Thursday over at The Diaper Diaries, because I really do love that cookbook stand.

My Wedding Ring

I love my wedding ring. I've had it since September, I believe. I only take it off when I'm kneading dough or making meatloaf. I really would hate to lose it.
Because I know how that feels. This is my third wedding ring. Although it's not as terrible as it sounds.

When Eric and I first got married, the circumstances were a little unconventional (another story for another day). We were so in love and so focused on getting married that our rings held little concern for us. And honestly, I've never been very into jewelry. So we just purchased a simple ring from a rack in a department store.

A year after we were married, Eric bought me a simple gold band to replace my original $20 ring that I had lost when it fell off my finger. I lost that replacement ring at the hospital when I had Olivia.

We couldn't afford to replace the ring right away and after a while, it just wasn't that important to me. The symbolism behind the ring mattered so much more then anything I put on my finger.

Yet there were times when I wished for a ring. A wedding ring has a lot of value and meaning in our society. Sometimes, it just didn't feel right to not wear a ring. Eric wanted me to have a ring too.

So we packed up all 4 kids and headed out to the jewelry store to pick out my wedding ring. It was kind of comical. We looked at some more traditional ones, but I instantly fell in love with this one. It is much more my style and much more representative of our marriage. It is simple, yet beautiful. It's nontraditional, yet old-fashioned. It fits in every possible way.
I love my ring because it's unique. I found it at just right the time in my life. It is so special and I'm proud to show it off. Kind of like how I feel about my husband!

So Worth the $7.00

Lately, it seems like our silverware has been falling into a black hole. Well not exactly a black hole, but close enough. We've found it under couch cushions, in beds, in the toybox.

And we know a good portion of it has been slipped into the little crack between our counter top and cabinet left from when the dishwasher was installed. If we ever (God forbid!) get mice in our home, that would be the prime space for them to take up residence because they could eat like royalty with a nearly complete set of flatware at their disposal.

It has been an ongoing joke between Eric and I for awhile. But lately I've been seen the frustration in the situation more than the humor. There is no reason we should run out of forks before lunch time!

So Eric, because he loves me and gets that limiting my frustration is a good thing, stopped in at IKEA last week. There he picked up 2 boxes of "Bonus" flatware for $3.49 a piece. Each box contained 4 forks, 4 knives, 4 tablespoons, and 4 teaspoons. Perfect!Granted, this silverware is not the prettiest, but it is super functional. The kids love it. And the price was right.

The Jacket Dilema

I have needed a new winter jacket for the past few years. However, like so many of us moms do, I kept pushing my needs aside in favor of other things. Not to mention, I spent quite a few of those years pregnant and buying a new jacket during those times just isn't a very smart idea.

So this year, Eric finally twisted my arm enough and convinced me that I was going to finally get a new jacket. To help matters, we had a gift card for Kohl's that we received as a Christmas present. And the after-Christmas sales at Kohl's are phenomenal!

I fell in love with the first jacket I tried on. But I couldn't just take the first jacket I saw. I had to see what other options were available and price compare. There was a second jacket that I liked, although I didn't like it as much as the first. It also wasn't as warm as the first jacket. However, it did cost $20 less.

I couldn't decide and the kids needed a potty break, so we threw both jackets in the cart and headed toward the bathrooms. Eric took Alex and Olivia while I waited with the other two and debated over the jackets. My frugal-minded brain could just not let go of the fact that there was a $20 price difference between the two. I finally decided that I should go with the less-expensive option. Even though it wasn't as warm and I didn't like it as much, it seemed the wisest financial choice.

When Eric and the kids came back, I told him I had decided on the second jacket. He shrugged his shoulders, (he knew how much I liked the first one) and asked if it had anything to do with the cost. I said no. He shrugged but accepted my answer. As we walked back to the jacket section, he told me all the things he liked about the first jacket. I completely agreed with him, but I still felt torn. So I said, "okay, maybe it does have a little to do with the price." He laughed and put the second jacket back on its rack. We bought the first one.

And you know what? I'm so glad that we did! I just love my new jacket. It is so warm. It has cuffed sleeves that keep the snow out and a soft collar that keeps my neck nice and toasty. I think the color is fantastic. I don't know if I've ever owned any clothing this shade of green before, but I like the difference. I know I wouldn't have felt this way if we went with my initial choice. I also know I wouldn't have been as warm.

Which leads me to a point I've made in the past, but sometimes have a problem practicing myself. There is a difference between being frugal and being cheap. When something is a better quality, more durable and functional, and just an overall better option, it's sometimes okay to spend a little extra. Was the extra $20 we spent worth it? Based on just the warmth and other features alone, I'd have to say yes. Do I still feel a little guilty for going this route? Maybe a little, but only until I step outside!

What would you have done in my shoes? Which jacket would you have purchased? I would really love to hear about it.

I Love The Yellow Pages!

And I am not talking about the online yellow pages either. No, I mean the old-fashioned, 20 pound book that gets delivered on our front stoop once or twice a year.

When my kids were little babies and needed to be walked around in the middle of the night, I'd grab the yellow pages off the top of the freezer and set it open on the counter. I'd pace with a dozing baby on my shoulder while flipping the pages. It was a perfect fit for those nights - the content wasn't interesting enough to wake me up completely, yet it was enough of a distraction that I wasn't just staring at the ticking hands on the clock.

Eventually, I started to realize that I was thumbing through the yellow pages at other random times, just because I wanted to. If I needed to fill a 5-minute gap while on hold withthe doctor's office or waiting for water to boil, it just seemed like the natural thing to look at. That slowly led to nights spent on the couch flipping through the phone book while watching tv and waiting for my husband to get home from work.

So just what is it about the yellow pages that draws me in so much? I'm not 100% sure. But, I do like reading company slogans and seeing what unusual industries are out there. My favorite part has to be the restaurant section though. I love reading through all of those menus. If a phone book comes into this house that doesn't have a menu section, it gets recycled immediately.

Eric thinks this is the strangest fascination he's ever heard of. He doesn't understand how anyone can enjoy perusing the yellow pages just for fun. When we get a new book, he always jokes that he knows the big plans I have for that night. And actually, he's usually right. (However, I must admit that this hobby has decreased significantly since I began blogging.) I guess it is a little quirky. But I can't possibly be alone in this, can I? Does anyone else do this?

A Grammatical Disclaimer

I freely admit to consistently using improper grammar in the following areas:
1. I like run-on sentences.
2. I have a tendency to end sentences with a pronoun. (I really do. I can't help it.)
3. I always seem to use passive voice in my sentences. (See?)

I've been trying to break this habit, unsuccessfully, for years, so now I just accept that as my writing style, and since I'm not writing for grades anymore, I embrace it. (Again, see?)
