J. Mark Bertrand has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Houston. After one hurricane too many, he left Houston and relocated with his wife Laurie to the plains of South Dakota.

Mark has been arrested for a crime he didn't commit, was the foreman of a hung jury in Houston, and after relocating served on the jury that acquitted Vinnie Jones of assault. CFBA Review ~ Tomorrow We Die

This week, the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance is introducing Tomorrow We Die Bethany House (July 1, 2010) by Shawn Grady

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book. I thought the storyline was unique and intriguing. One of my favorite aspects of the book was attempting to figure out the code along with the main characters. I also really enjoyed the inside look at the life and day-to-day work of a dedicated paramedic. It was certainly eye-opening!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Shawn Grady signed with Bethany House Publishers in 2008. He was named “Most Promising New Writer” at the 39th Annual Mount Hermon Writers Conference. He is the author of the novels Through the Fire & Tomorrow We Die.

Shawn has served for over a decade as a firefighter and paramedic in northern Nevada. From fire engines and ambulances to tillered ladder trucks and helicopters, Shawn’s work environment has always been dynamic. CFBA Review ~ Nightmare

My Thoughts:

I found this book both absolutely riveting and absolutely terrifying. I wanted to put it down, but I couldn't! The story line was very unique and I really enjoyed that aspect. I'd definitely recommend this book. Although, I do NOT recommend reading this book late at night in your new house when you do not know all of it's nighttime sounds and intricacies. I almost scared myself senseless a few times!

CFBA Review ~ Predator

This book was definitely a lesson in patience for me. I was desperate to get to that last page to find out the resolution. Krista was such an easy character to relate and I easily slipped into her shoes as I turned the pages. She is the kind of main character I must enjoy!

CFBA Review ~ Deadly Disclosure

My Thoughts:

I loved the suspense and intrigue throughout the book. I am always surprised by how much I enjoy this genre, but I think it has a lot to do with the quality of the writing and the story line. Since I don't always choose this type of book as my first choice, any time I really enjoy the book, like I did with Deadly Disclosure, I feel confident in recommending it to others. I am thrilled that this book is the first of a trilogy too - I can't wait to read more!

Although similar in subject to many other books I've read, this book stood out as unique and interesting. I think it was the combination of the suspenseful plot combined with the time period. It made for an unforgettable read! DiAnn Mills has yet to disappoint me with any of her books I've read.

CFBA Review ~ Spring's Renewal

My Thoughts:

Although a little predictable, this was a very sweet story. I really enjoy Shelley Shepherd Gray's insight and take on the Amish community. I feel an understanding that I've never known before when I read her books. That alone is a great asset to this book. Add in a sweet story and a pleasant read and this book is a good way to spend an afternoon or two!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Since 2000, Shelley Sabga has sold twenty-six novels to numerous publishers. She has written a seven book contemporary series for Avalon books. She also published The Love Letter, a western for Avalon. Five Star Expressions published Suddenly, You in February of 2007. This novel is a historical western set in the mountains of Colorado.



Shelley has written nine novels for Harlequin American Romance. Cinderella Christmas, her first novel with them, reached number six on the Waldenbooks Bestseller list. CFBA Review ~ The Sword

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Bryan Litfin was born in Dallas, but lived in Memphis, Tennessee and Oxford, England, where he discovered that the house of his favorite author, J.R.R. Tolkien, was only five doors down from his own. Bryan still enjoys epic adventure stories, as well as historical fiction. However, most of his reading these days is taken up by academia.

After marrying his high school sweetheart, Carolyn (a true Southern belle), he went on to study for a master’s degree in historical theology at Dallas Theological Seminary. From there he went to the University of Virginia, taking a PhD in the field of ancient church history. He is the author of Getting to Know the Church Fathers: An Evangelical Introduction (Brazos, 2007), as well as several scholarly articles and essays.

In 2002, Bryan took a position on the faculty at Moody Bible Institute in downtown Chicago, where he is a professor in the Theology Department. He teaches courses in theology, church history, and Western civilization from the ancient and medieval periods.

On the morning of January 6, 2007, Bryan woke up with an epiphany. Having finished writing his primer on the ancient church, he had the idea of trying his hand at fiction. The thought occurred to him that the writer of speculative fiction typically has two options. He can create an imaginary land like Middle Earth (which offers great creative freedom but is unrealistic), or he can delve into genuine history (which is realistic, yet limted to what ‘actually occurred.’) However, if a writer were to create a future world as in the Chiveis trilogy, it could be both realistic and creatively unlimited.

This little dream stayed in Bryan’s mind while he researched how to write fiction, and also researched the European landscape where the novel would be set. He planned a trip to the story locations, then went there in the summer with a buddy from grad school. Bryan and Jeff rented a Beemer and drove all over Europe from the Alps to the Black Forest with a video camera in hand. With that epic setting fresh in his mind, Bryan returned home and began to write.

Today Bryan lives in downtown Wheaton in a Victorian house built in 1887. He is blessed by God to be married to Carolyn, and to be the father of two amazing children, William, 11, and Anna, 9. For recreation Bryan enjoys basketball, traveling, and hiking anywhere there are mountains (which means getting far away from the Midwest – preferably to his beloved Smokies).

CFBA Review ~ Sworn To Protect

My Thoughts:

I have read several of DiAnn Mills' books and I've really enjoyed them all. Sworn To Protect was no exception. It's one of those books that lets you piece together little bits of information that not all of the characters know. So I found myself trying to piece everything together while staying a step ahead of all the characters. That definitely adds to the thrill of any book.

Also, I appreciated the border patrol and immigration story lines. Sad to admit, but I am largely ignorant of what the border patrol faces on a day-to-day basis and this was a great look inside.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought Siri Mitchell did a fantastic job of accurately writing the time period. It made the book very engrossing. Each time I opened the pages, I felt like I was stepping into a different world.

Siri Mitchell graduated from the University of Washington with a business degree and worked in various levels of government. As a military spouse, she has lived all over the world, including in Paris and Tokyo. Siri enjoys observing and learning from different cultures. She is fluent in French and loves sushi.

But she is also a member of a strange breed of people called novelists. When they’re listening to a sermon and taking notes, chances are, they’ve just had a great idea for a plot or a dialogue. My Thoughts:
My husband and I are huge fans of 24. We love the suspense and action and the way the story lines come together. Well, as a 24 fan, I can honestly say Dead Reckoning did not disappoint! It was a fast-paced page turner that I thoroughly enjoyed. And I really admired the way Ronie Kendig wove elements of faith throughout the story. Such a nice twist to a speed-of-light plot.


ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ronie has been married since 1990 to a man who can easily be defined in classic terms as a hero. She has four beautiful children. Her eldest daughter is 16 this year, her second daughter will be 13, and her twin boys are 10. After having four children, she finally finished her degree in December 2006. She now has a B.S. in Psychology through Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Getting her degree is a huge triumph for both her and her family--they survived!

This degree has also given her a fabulous perspective on her characters
and how to not only make them deeper, stronger, but to make them realistic and know how they'll respond to each situation. Her debut novel, Dead Reckoning released March 2010 from Abingdon Press. And her Discarded Heroes series begins in July from Barbour with the first book entitled Nightshade.

Loved this book! The storyline was so unique and intriguing. As I read, I was simply enjoying the story for what it was. Once I finished though, I realized it had a wonderfully deep undertone while still being light and thoroughly enjoyable on the surface. Good stuff!

Leanna's sister recommended that she write, since she ‘wrote in her journal all the time.’ The idea took root and began to grow. So after five years of teaching, she quit and started writing, with no clue about the book business. Ignorance is bliss. If she’d known the odds against her, she might not have ever started writing.



For about three years, she wrote with a collaborator, but because she had so many ideas she began to write more stories on her own. She suffered numerous rejections. Deservedly so. But she was growing as a writer and learning. She went to as many conferences as she could manage. During that time, she met her future husband, fell in love and became engaged. Most readers want to know how authors 'got started' writing. My first novel, Threads of Love, was conceived when I was commuting sixty miles to work each day. I had absolutely no idea how publication of a book occurred and had given no thought to the concept. However, through a co-worker, I was directed to Tracie Peterson who, at that time, worked down the hall from me.



With a graciousness that continues to amaze me, Tracie agreed to read my story, directed me to a publisher, and gave me information on a Christian writers conference. Since that first encounter many years ago, I have been blessed with the publication of numerous books, novellas and a juvenile fiction book. Joyously, Tracie and I had the opportunity to develop a blessed friendship. In fact, we have co-authored several series together, including The Bells of Lowell, the Lights of Lowell and The Broadmoor Legacy. In addition, I have continued to write several solo series.



Note: Judith Miller is an award-winning author whose avid research and love for history are reflected in her novels, two of which have placed in the CBA top ten lists. In addition to her writing, Judy is a certified legal assistant. Judy and her husband make their home in Topeka, Kansas.
